The BrandLaureate BestBrands Award 2013-2014 winners were announced by the Asia Pacific Brands Foundation (APBF) at its gala dinner on 30 May 2014, held at The Majestic Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, with over 1,000 guests comprising corporate leaders, brand owners and leading personalities attending the dinner.
The theme of this year’s award is “Celebrating Your Brand Greatness! The Great Moments”, which expresses the need for brands to achieve greatness if they want to achieve the No.1 position in their industry.
I’m quite impressed with the presentation and overall quality food at Majestic Hotel KL. Not to say it’s remarkably delicious or outstanding, however this was my fourth gala dinner at the hotel in 2014 and they’ve managed to serve up decent food that’s beautifully presented each time.
In his welcome speech, Dr KKJohan, the President of The BrandLaureate said that to build brand greatness, one needs to strategise for the brand to look beyond all angles and possibilities.
“Branding must exceed the expectation – because the more impact your brand brings, the Greater your brand is. Never fear to take up the challenge to become the Greatest Brand of all time! Greatness is what makes the brand stands out and it must have the credibility to portray strong leadership. Great brands are the one that bring radical change in communities and societies. Great brands practice positive attitude and has the capacity to triumph over any challenges and obstacles that may come its way. In a tough environment, you need to be ahead of the game, and the only way to successfully achieve that market leadership position is to achieve Brand Greatness!”
Dr Johan also expressed the need for a branding hub to help Malaysia improve and increase its competitiveness. “ We already have so many hubs but to me the mother of all hubs is the branding hub. I have conceptualized the idea of the branding hub and I want you to know that the branding hub will increase our capability and capacity in brand building and also will improve our productivity in nation building. The whole business world is a world of brands and branding. Business is all about the brand and the brand is all about the business. Only brands sell. Brands inspire and drive the business. If Malaysia wants to be on par with the superpowers, then we need to have strong brands that can push our economy up the curve of success.”

During the night, over 80 companies and individuals received The BrandLaureate Awards which were divided into the following categories of

- The BrandLaureate President’s Award
- The BrandLaureate Brand of the Year Award
- The BrandLaureate Man of the Year Award
- The BrandLaureate Country Branding Award
The night also saw The BrandLaureate Country Branding Award awarded to Captain James Anthony Tan, the world’s youngest solo pilot receive the Award along with child star, Crystal Lee who won the most promising child star award at the Shanghai Film Festival. Crystal also wowed guests with her vocal prowess that belied her age.
