Recently I got the chance to attend an exclusive media single malt whisky tasting session organised by AsiaEuro and led by Gordon Dundas of Morrison Bowmore Distillers. We got to taste five (5) different variants from three (3) different brands which are distributed by AsiaEuro here in Malaysia namely – Auchentoshan, Bowmore and Glen Garioch.
Auchentoshan was established in 1823 and the distillery sits on the outskirts of Glasgow which makes them a lowland single malt whisky. The name means “corner of the field” and they are the only distillery in Scotland to have a third still, making Auchentoshan a triple distilled whisky, which gives their spirit a complex, smooth and delicate flavour.
Auchentoshan 12 Years Old
Auchentoshan 12 Years Old is matured for at least 12 years in fine North American bourbon oak casks and has notes of creme brulee, citrus and nuttiness when nosed, and on the palate it is smooth with hints of tangerine and lime. The aftertaste leaves you with a slight nutty taste. This whisky is easy to drink and should have a wide appeal.
Auchentoshan Three Wood
Auchentoshan Three Wood has been matured in three (3) different types of fine oak casks – North American Bourbon, Spanish Oloroso Sherry, and Pedro Ximenez Sherry.
On the nose it give out hints of currants, brown sugar, orange, plum and raisin while on the palate it tastes of hazelnut, cinnamon, lemon and butterscotch. The finish is fresh and fruity with oaky sweetness. This is a remarkably smooth and complex whisky and my favourite of the night!
This whisky goes well with roasted Peking duck, dark chocolate and even venison.
Bowmore was founded in 1779 and is the first recorded distillery on Islay. Islay malts are known for their peaty smoky taste and nose as the malt is smoked in a peat-fired klin however as the distillery is located on the shored of Lock Indaal the whisky ends up with medium levels of peaty smokiness.
Bowmore 12 Years Old
Bowmore 12 Years Old is a complex and balanced whisky with a long, mellow finish. On the palate you can taste heather honey and peat smoke while adding a (tiny) dash of water releases some citrus notes. This whisky goes well with seafood but be warned – it’s not for the amateur.
Bowmore 15 Years Old “Darkest”
This whisky gets its “darkest” distinction by first being matured in North American bourbon barrels, then in Oloroso sherry casks. On the nose you can smell dark chocolate and raisin while on the palate there are flavours of cedar wood, and rich treacle toffee with a hint of sherry tannin. This one is also for the connoisseur.
Glen Garioch is NOT pronounced “glen ga riok” but rather as “Glen Geery” which refers to the region and means “the granary” which is a tract of rich fertile farm land known as “The Granary of Aberdeenshire”. It is bottled in Oldmeldrum since 1797 making it one of Scotland’s oldest distilleries.
The whisky is bottled non chill filtered which means more flavours are retained by the whisky however the whisky can get cloudy when mixed with ice. This is perfectly normal and does NOT mean that the whisky has gone bad. The strength of the spirit is 48% alcohol but as it’s a smooth and flavourful whisky, you won’t taste any harsh alcohol taste. This whisky is released in small batches and is definitely for the advanced whisky drinker.

Attended the media preview of the cigar night at Pavilions Lounge at the Sheraton Imperial Kuala Lumpur recently and enjoyed a night lounging on the comfy sofas with cigars, delicious chocolates, and smooth and slightly spicy Spanish brandy.

Balcony KL @ Hock Choon Launch
There’s a new kid on the block over at the row of restaurant behind the Hock Choon supermarket along Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur, and that is the aptly named “The Balcony KL” which is a new al-fresco terrace bar serving food, cocktails and premium beers.
The Balcony is the brainchild of its two (2) founders – Alvin Sinclair and Viknesh (Vik) who wanted an outdoor bar concept serving premium drinks. The outlet is located on the first floor and overlooks the water fountain on the ground level. Its kitchen serves up meats, fish, burgers and more to go along with local and imported beers, cocktails and spirits.
The outlet is available for private and corporate functions, and is able to accommodate up to 120 guests, with customized menu to suit the occasion.
