Robert Parker Grand World Tour – ‘A Taste of Greatness’ Master Class

Robert Parker Grand World Tour – ‘A Taste of Greatness’ Master Class

I had the honour of attending the KL leg of Robert Parker Grand World Tour – ‘A Taste of Greatness’ Master Class  with Ellice and MHB’s Naomi Tham on 9 March 2014 at Hilton KL Sentral. I say honour is because each seat at the master class cost USD400 and it’s certainly not something that happens very often. Apart from Kuala Lumpur, the grand tour spans multiple cities in Asia including Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Singapore, and is presented by American Express.

Robert Parker is known for creating the famous 100-point rating system. His wine ratings, and his newsletter The Wine Advocate, have made him influential in American wine buying, and he is widely acknowledged to be the most widely known and influential wine critic in the world today. His rating scores affect the market prices of many wines especially from Bordeaux, and he is the only critic in any field to receive the highest Presidential honors from France, Italy and the highest civilian honor by Spain. Robert Parker’s expert opinion is highly sought by TIME, 60 Minutes, The New York Times, The London Sunday Times, The Sunday Telegraphe, The Independent and more.

The master class was hosted by wine critics Robert Parker, Lisa Perrotti-Brown and Monica Larner, together with renowned wine-makers from prestigious vineyards to speak about The Great Cabernet Sauvignons of the World Labels including those from Château Léoville-Las Cases and Château Montrose.

The master class also featured Badoit Natural Mineral Water for us to cleanse our palate between the wines. Badoit Natural Mineral Water originates beneath the small town of Saint-Galmier, located in the Loire Region of Southern France, at the foot of Mount Forez. The water begins its long journey 153 metres below ground through granite soil that naturally carbonates the water, and as it journeys through various mineralogical strata, it acquires its sparkle, finesse and unique mineral properties, springing forth at a constant temperature of 16°C.

Michelin-starred Chef Thierry Marx who is the Executive Chef at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Paris, and one of France’s most distinguished chefs remarked, “Badoit is the water that inspires me the most, both as a consumer and a chef. The taste of Badoit is unique, an aromatic uniqueness as well as a very singular texture, it is almost a signature taste in itself. Its bubbles are fine but energetic, never a lull to be seen…with them, daily routine turns into a dance and they awaken the slightest ingredient. This product has long been adopted as one of my key ingredients… I love this water. It has been a faithful companion of mine for decades now…”

Chivas Future Music Festival Asia 2014 Pre Party

Chivas Regal hosted a series of Future Music Festival Asia 2014 pre-parties in Johor Bahru, Malacca and Penang as they are the official liquor for the festival which will be happening today until 15 March 2014. I managed to catch the last party in the series which was at Poppy Garden KL on 7 March 2014, where DJ Monkey and DJ Funkzu were burning the decks, with DJ Taka making a guest appearance.

The club was decked out in a jungle theme, and we were given animal masks and animal party hats as door gifts. In line with the jungle theme, the promoter girls and dancers were dressed in explorer and animal outfits.

Games were also conducted for consumers who purchased Chivas Regal at the club, where they stood a chance to win Chivas Regal Night magnum bottles, Chivas Regal 12 Year-Old bottles, and other Chivas Regal merchandise. The game was played using a modified NERF gun to shoot specially modified darts at a rotating dart board with the highest score of the night being the grand prize winner. I tried the game for fun and I turned out to be pretty good at it. Unfortunately I wasn’t eligible to win a prize as I was there as part of the media.

Zeni Wine Tasting

Headed over to Happer in Damansara Jaya on 12 March 2014 for the Zeni wine tasting. The Zeni winery is located and operates in the heart of the vinegrowing area in Bardolino, on the slopes of the morainic hills along the eastern shore of Lake Garda in Italy. The Winery also buys selected parcels of grapes from trusted local grape growers with whom it maintains enduring collaborations.

In Zeni’s underground barrique cellar, the company takes meticulous care with the growing of the vine, the grape raisining and the following vinification is also paid to the aging and refining of the wines.  Zeni’s constant dedication to the art of winemaking has been passed on from generation to generation, and represents the principles of century-old familiar tradition.

We got to taste five (5) different Zeni wines including Soave doc Classico, Bardolino Chiaretto Rosado, Valpolicella, and Amarone Della Valpolicella.
