I rarely cover community issues (shame on me) with the last one being the Paradigm Mall fiasco however this incident really made me very disgusted by the actions of an older woman belittling an undergraduate.
A video featuring a female master of ceremonies or moderator of a forum entitled “Seiringkah mahasiswa dan politik?” (Are graduates and politics aligned?) has been making its way virally across cyberspace and sparked a wave of anger and scorn over her rude and demeaning behaviour towards a student who was participating in the forum held at Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) in Kedah on 8 December 2012.
The second year law student, Miss Bavani, who was clearly prepared with notes and facts written on a notepad, had asked the panel why Malaysian students were not given free education unlike Argentina, Cuba and Brazil.
The MC/ moderator then cut her off by saying “listen” 11 times then moving her microphone away and went on to lecture the student on respect and animal problems.
Check out the video.
The incident sparked off several parodies and memes of the incident:
A creative video by Namewee.
A dance remix by Yuri Wong.
Song by Mr. Bia
At the beginning of the video, students were made to read a pledge which was obviously to brainwash the students asking them not to “menentang demonstrasi jalanan” or to fight against street demonstrations which obviously referred to the BERSIH civil society movement.
Also featured was an Islamic video shown to students which had no relevance to the forum. Non-Muslim students were not invited to leave the hall either.
Isn’t that being rather insensitive towards the non-Muslim students?
OK those are bad but nothing beats the uncouth, rude MC/ moderator Sharifah Zohra Jabeen.
She rudely interrupted someone who was speaking with her incessant “listen listen listen…”.
She totally did not answer the studen’t question but instead decided to digress from the topic by talking about animals and their problems.
Sharifah remarked, “when this is our programme, we allow you to speak” and “when I speak, you listen”.
Why have a forum when only Sharifah can speak?
“Students in the hall, 2,300 students everywhere. Did I give her respect? Did I give her respect? I came up to her, shook hands with her and gave her respect as another woman. Do you think I need to answer her question with this attitude?”
Yes she shook hands with her then immediately insulted her. Amazing!
Sharifah then labelled Bersih’s Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan an “anarchist”, and said “if you equate Malaysia to other countries, what are you doing in Malaysia?”
Err…we are citizens who would like to see our beloved nation progress. What are YOU doing in Malaysia Sharifah? Spreading hate and lies?
“Go to Cuba, go to Argentina, go to Libya, go everywhere. Because all the students in this hall are happy with whatever the government does for them,”
More brainwashing bullshit…
Sharifah then went on to insult Bavani as having “a very least of pendidikan [education]”.
Wow…if you’re going to insult a person at least get your grammar correct.
She even cut off a forum panellist and quickly changed the topic by asking who wanted to win a Samsung Galaxy Note (hopefully Samsung was not the sponsor of the forum).
The students in attendance were a bunch of brainwashed sheep with no critical thinking and clapped to support the stupid comments given by Sharifah Zohra Jabeen. This comes as no surprise as the Malaysian education system was designed to keep the rakyat stupid to keep the ruling coalition in power.
As the incident came to light, many angry netizens voiced their displeasure towards the incident on the Suara Wanita 1Malaysia Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/SuaraWanita1Malaysia) as Sharifah is the president of the NGO.
The page’s admins shockingly decided to take to the offensive and attack Miss Bavani and share content from pro-UMNO blogs and supporters while claiming that the page was non political and asked people not to bring politics into the picture.
The page’s admins then went on to make a whole series of brazenly hateful and childish remarks regarding the incident and continues to do so despite a storm of irate comments by horrified and enraged readers.
This incident is so shameful and disgusting on so many levels that I just had to highlight it.
BTW if you are an animal lover there is a page called Pusat Aduan Haiwan 1Malaysia (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Pusat-Aduan-Haiwan-1-Malaysia-PAH1M/394525883969714) that was setup following this incident to help the animals with problems as highlighted by Sharifah.
Among the complaints were cows who were promised condominiums but did not receive them.
UPDATED ON 21 JANUARY 2012
“First and foremost, I forgive the young girl in the video for whatever she said and did before, during and after the forum,” SAID Sharifah Zohra.
She forgives Miss Bavani!
Sharifah actually belives she’s the victim!
Wow…talk about being delusional*.
*oddly enough she’s not the only delusional person I know. I know a Jealous Loser out there is equally delusional and believes that he’s so good looking that he takes selca topless photos of himself and posts it on social media. But that’s another story for another day.
Listen carefully to the apology. It’s not actually an apology. The only apology is to the organisers of the forum for the negative publicity that it received.
Yes LISTEN carefully! Her apology didn’t actually contain an apology!
Sharifah then detracts from the topic at hand to attack the opposition parties (guess she couldn’t use no animals this time) and spread more propaganda.
