Before the start of the annual Raja Muda Selangor International Regatta, Tiger Beer has kicked off events with a celebration of all things sailing with a nautical-themed Tiger party at Port Klang on 10 November 2011.
Now I have never been to a regatta so off I went with Malaysia’s Hottest Bloggers’ Samantha Kong to the Royal Selangor Yacht Club, which is the site of the launch of the premier offshore passage race inMalaysia. Following on from the successful partnership forged between the Regatta and Tiger, the Tiger Challenge Trophy was officially presented by Tiger to the Regatta at an unveiling ceremony during the celebrations.
The unique feature of the Tiger Challenge Trophy is that for the first time, all IRC yachts regardless of their classes will compete for one distinctive trophy. The Tiger Challenge Trophy will be awarded to the IRC boat and skipper with the best offshore passage race performance, based on the lowest points score. The offshore passage races are run from throughout the Regatta passage; Port Klang to Pangkor, Pangkor to Penang and lastly, Penang to Langkawi, which is the last stop for the Regatta.
Sean Koh, Marketing Manager of Tiger said, “Here at Tiger Beer, we have always believed that determination and passion are the fundamental cornerstones to launch any bid for glory, and so we are extremely proud to be presenting the winners of the new “Best Offshore Passage Race Performance” category with the Tiger Challenge Trophy. In an event that embraces so many different sizes and types of boats, To be able to honour the overall outstanding achievement of the Tiger Challenge winner regardless of class, gives us great pleasure.”

We got an opportunity to meet Captain Shane Granger, owner and master of the Historic Sailing Vessel (H.V.) VEGA, which was docked at the yatch . The beautiful vessel and crew is to transport press and public relations personnel and H.V. VEGA will be present during all races.

.
Built in 1892-93, for over 100 years the H.V. VEGA carried cargos of bricks, building stone, pig iron, and cement through some of the world’s roughest seas. Rugged enough for the North Sea and certified for Arctic trade, the H.V. VEGA was famous for her strength and ability to carry loads other boats her size could not.
Currently embarked on a career of missions of mercy, carrying cargos of donated medical and educational supplies on the South East monsoon to isolated island communities in East Timor and Indonesia, the H.V. Vega visits Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand gathering donated supplies for the people on these island. Captain Granger and his lovely wife told us some stories about their visits to the island where it’s inhabitants are so poor it’s really very heartbreaking.
