OMODA | JAECOO Malaysia has officially launched the JAECOO J5 in Malaysia on 5 March 2026, priced from RM108,000 on the road without insurance. For OMODA | JAECOO Malaysia, the J5 represents a deliberate step into a new buyer demographic as the compact B-segment crossover arrives as the brand’s most accessible model to date and is positioned, in JAECOO’s own words, for the ‘Urban Explorer’ — a buyer who wants a premium-feeling vehicle capable of handling both city commuting and weekend excursions without asking too much in return.
The launch was officiated by YB Tuan Sim Tze Tzin, Deputy Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI), whose attendance underscored the broader industrial dimension of the J5’s arrival in Malaysia.
“The launch of the JAECOO J5 is not just about a new car on our roads; it is a testament to the growing confidence global players have in Malaysia’s industrial ecosystem. MITI is accelerating efforts to transform Malaysia’s automotive industry into a hub for higher-value manufacturing, electric vehicles, and export-led growth under the New Industrial Master Plan 2030.”

“Broadening our model lineup to reach a new segment of drivers — individuals and families seeking versatility, comfort and sophistication — the JAECOO J5 delivers freedom for everyday urban life and weekend adventures, without leaving your world behind.”
Chris Tan, Head of OMODA | JAECOO Malaysia
The J5 is powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 108 kW (147 PS) and 210 Nm of torque, paired with a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) driving the front wheels. The engine incorporates intake integrated intercooling and an integrated exhaust manifold (IEM) cylinder head — technologies designed to improve thermal efficiency and throttle response across everyday driving conditions. Official fuel consumption is rated at 6.4 litres per 100 km on the Malaysia Driving Cycle (MDC), and the J5 carries Malaysian Energy Efficient Vehicle (EEV) certification.
The body measures 4,380 mm in length, 1,860 mm wide, and 1,650 mm tall, with a 2,620 mm wheelbase — dimensions that give it a planted, confident stance without becoming unwieldy in tighter urban environments. Structural rigidity is a point JAECOO is keen to press: the J5 uses advanced high-tensile steel in key areas of the body and claims a torsional rigidity rating of 23,500 Nm/deg, a figure that speaks to body stiffness and, by extension, refinement and handling precision.
The suspension setup pairs a MacPherson strut arrangement up front with a multi-link rear — a configuration that prioritises lateral stability and ride composure across varied road surfaces. The J5 rides on 18-inch dual-tone aluminium alloy wheels shod with 235/55 R18 tyres.

Step inside and the J5 makes a considered first impression. The five-seater cabin is finished in leatherette upholstery with white seat piping, and the front seats are ventilated — a genuinely useful feature in the Malaysian climate. Double-glazed front windows are fitted as standard, working to reduce the intrusion of exterior noise and create a more composed cabin atmosphere at speed.
The panoramic moonroof is a headline specification: at 1.45 square metres, JAECOO claims it as the largest in its class, and in practice it floods the interior with natural light and reinforces a sense of space that the external dimensions alone do not necessarily suggest. Boot space is rated at 480 litres, expanding to 1,284 litres with the 60/40 split-fold rear seats lowered — practical numbers for a vehicle that positions itself as equally at home running school runs and weekend camping trips.
A detail worth noting is the TÜV-certified pet-friendly upholstery — anti-bacterial and scratch-resistant — which reflects a thoughtful acknowledgement of how many Malaysian families actually use their cars. Less conventional still is the built-in in-car mixer with app control, which allows the cabin to double as a karaoke lounge. It is an unapologetically fun feature, and one that fits the J5’s personality without feeling forced.
The infotainment system centres on a 13.2-inch 2K touchscreen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, paired with an 8.0-inch LCD instrument cluster and an 8-speaker audio system. A 50W wireless charging pad with active ventilation sits on the central console — the ventilation detail preventing the heat build-up that typically plagues wireless chargers during extended use.
The J5 comes equipped with a Level 2+ Advanced Driver Assistance System suite comprising 19 features as standard. These span the full expected range — Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Full-Speed Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keeping Assist, Blind Spot Detection, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert and Braking, Evasive Steering Assist, Traffic Jam Assist, and Door Opening Warning among them. The list also includes Multi-Collision Braking, which applies the brakes automatically following an initial impact to reduce the risk of secondary collisions — a meaningful real-world safety feature that does not always receive the attention it deserves.
A 540-degree HD Surround View camera system is fitted, providing a composite overhead view of the vehicle’s surroundings during parking and low-speed manoeuvring.
The JAECOO J5 2WD is priced from RM 108,000 OTR without insurance and is backed by a 7-year or 150,000 km vehicle warranty — whichever comes first — one of the more generous warranty terms available at this price point.
For buyers who move quickly, a Special Launch Package is available from 5 to 15 March 2026, comprising a Duit Raya rebate of RM 3,000, a choice of complimentary first-year insurance or an additional RM 3,000 Duit Raya, and a Car Accessories Trio Package valued at RM 2,000 that includes a subwoofer, a wireless karaoke microphone, and a multi-functional flashlight.
In conjunction with the launch, OMODA | JAECOO Malaysia delivered the first five J5 vehicles to customers, with the company working alongside its authorised dealer network to accelerate deliveries nationwide. Test drives are now available at all authorised OMODA | JAECOO dealerships across the country.
