Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD has unveiled plans to establish a Completely Knocked Down (CKD) assembly facility in Malaysia, marking a significant commitment to the Southeast Asian market as the company simultaneously launched its updated SEAL sedan model. The announcement was made on 22 August 2025, at an event in Seri Kembangan that highlighted BYD’s growing presence in Malaysia through its partnership with distributor Sime Motors.
The planned CKD factory will be located in Tanjung Malim, Perak, spanning 600,000 square metres with vehicle production scheduled to begin in 2026. This represents a substantial investment in local manufacturing capabilities that BYD says will make electric vehicles more accessible and affordable for Malaysian consumers.
“Malaysia has always been one of BYD’s most important markets in Southeast Asia, and today’s dual announcement of CKD and the New BYD SEAL marks a new chapter in our journey here. With the strong support of Sime Motors, we are confident in deepening our roots in Malaysia and bringing world-class EV technology closer to local customers. This commitment is not only about delivering innovative products, but also about investing in the future of Malaysia’s EV ecosystem — from local assembly, to talent development, and electric mobility. Together, we look forward to accelerating Malaysia’s transition towards a greener and smarter transportation future, with BYD standing as a long-term partner to the nation.”

Alongside the manufacturing announcement, BYD Sime Motors introduced the refreshed BYD SEAL, building on what the company claims was Malaysia’s best-selling electric sedan in 2024. The updated model is available in Premium and Performance variants, maintaining the model’s “SEAL THE SPEED” positioning while introducing new features and design elements.
The Performance variant accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 3.8 seconds and features the DiSus-C Intelligent Damping Body Control System typically found in luxury vehicles. The Premium variant offers up to 650 km of NEDC range and includes Frequency Selective Damping shock absorbers.
Both variants receive design updates including new 19-inch alloy rims, an electric sunshade for the panoramic sunroof, seamless keyless access technology, and a sunglass holder. The Performance model adds red brake calipers for enhanced visual appeal. A new Shark Grey colour option joins the existing Aurora White, Atlantis Grey, and Cosmos Black choices.
Pricing starts at RM171,800 for the Premium variant and RM191,800 for the Performance model. The first 300 customers will receive a launch package worth up to RM10,888, including a free wall charger, service package, and launch rebate. Customers interested in the new BYD SEAL can place bookings at BYD outlets nationwide.
“Today’s launch builds on the success of the BYD SEAL, which was Malaysia’s best-selling electric sedan in 2024. With the updated model, we are confident it will continue to attract a wide range of Malaysian customers with its enhanced features. Together with the CKD production plan, this further reinforce our position as the No.1 BEV brand in Malaysia. Backed by strong after-sales commitment and the rapid expansion of our outlets nationwide, we remain dedicated to driving the growth of electric mobility across Malaysia. Currently, we have 36 BYD outlets in operations and growing.”

The launch event also marked the opening of BYD’s largest 3S (Sales, Service, Spare parts) centre in Malaysia, operated by Wing Hin Ventures in Balakong. The facility spans 3,360 square metres across three levels, featuring two floors of showrooms, 10 service bays, and a 1,514 square metre after-sales area.
This brings BYD’s total outlet count in Malaysia to 36 locations, supporting the brand’s expansion strategy in the country.
