Mercedes-Benz Malaysia officially unveiled the highly anticipated all-new Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology on 26 June 2025, marking a historic leap in the evolution of the iconic Geländewagen. This pioneering electric version retains the unmistakable character of the traditional G-Class, maintaining its classic angular silhouette and signature design elements that have defined the model for generations, while propelling it into the future with groundbreaking electric mobility and advanced off-road capabilities.

The new G 580 with EQ Technology exemplifies a seamless fusion of tradition and innovation, combining the legendary G-Class design with a revolutionary electric drivetrain. Engineered for superior performance both on and off the road, this electric G-Class introduces pioneering functions—such as G-TURN, G-STEERING, and an intelligent off-road crawl system—that enhance driver control over challenging terrains.

The launch also features the exclusive limited EDITION ONE model, distinguished by unique blue accents adorning both its exterior and interior, underscoring the brand’s dedication to luxury and exclusivity.

At the heart of the G 580 EQ lies a sophisticated electric drive system with four independently controlled electric motors, positioned near each wheel and integrated within the robust ladder frame chassis. This marks Mercedes-Benz’s first mass-produced vehicle employing individual-wheel drive technology.

Each motor delivers a peak output of 108 kW, together generating a formidable total of 432 kW (579 hp) and an impressive peak torque of 1,164 Nm. The powertrain collaborates with Electronic Stability Program (ESP®) and central powertrain control (CPC) to dynamically distribute torque to wheels requiring traction, ensuring optimal handling in all conditions.

Performance figures are remarkable for an off-roader of this class: the G 580 achieves 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.7 seconds, with a governed top speed of 180 km/h. Instant torque delivery from a standstill grants the vehicle exceptional pulling power and control on steep or loose terrain.

The electric G-Class employs advanced torque vectoring to create virtual differential locks, providing precise and adaptive torque allocation to each wheel. This technology removes the need for manual differential lock engagement, allowing seamless, automatic traction management and enhancing stability even on the most demanding slopes and surfaces.

Powering the G 580 EQ is a robust two-tiered lithium-ion battery pack, comprising 216 cells arranged into twelve modules with three levels of cooling. Encased within a torsion-resistant steel ladder frame, the battery benefits from enhanced structural rigidity and protection against water and dirt intrusion, preserving the vehicle’s legendary off-road durability.

The usable battery capacity is 116 kWh, enabling a WLTP-rated driving range of up to 473 kilometres on a single charge. The G 580 supports both AC charging—up to 11 kW—and DC fast charging at a peak of 200 kW. Fast charging can replenish the battery from 10% to 80% state of charge in approximately 32 minutes.

Drivers can choose from three intelligent charging programs—Standard, Work, and Home—allowing customisation based on individual schedules, climate control needs, and geographical location.

The G 580 EQ features an advanced recuperative braking system that converts kinetic energy into electrical energy during coasting and braking, effectively extending range. Recuperation levels can be adjusted manually via steering wheel paddles in multiple stages, offering tailored energy recovery adapted to driving conditions.

Mercedes-Benz’s comprehensive multi-stage high-voltage safety concept ensures occupant protection and system integrity. This includes eight critical safety elements designed to prevent electric shocks and short circuits, with automatic deactivation in the event of severe collisions.

The electrified G-Class transcends traditional off-road benchmarks. Its ladder frame has been extensively modified and reinforced, preserving the blend of a double-wishbone independent front suspension with a fully redeveloped rigid rear De Dion axle.

Key off-road capabilities include:

• Gradeability of up to 100% on compatible surfaces
• Ground clearance of at least 250 mm between axles
• Maximum water and mud fording depth of 850 mm, surpassing conventional G-Class variants
• Stable side slope driving up to 35°
• Approach, departure, and breakover angles of 32°, 30.7°, and 20.3°, respectively

The suspension includes adaptive adjustable dampers with active roll and pitch stabilisation, continuously tailoring damping characteristics to terrain changes and driving style for enhanced stability and comfort.

The G 580’s drivetrain features switchable LOW RANGE off-road gearing, enabled by individual two-speed transmissions on each motor. This setup offers a 2:1 gear reduction, optimising torque delivery for rugged terrain while maintaining smooth thermal management.

An ELECTRIC DYNAMIC SELECT system allows drivers to select between driving modes tailored to various conditions: Comfort, Sport, Individual (on-road), as well as Trail and Rock (off-road). These modes adjust motor output, transmission, suspension, ESP®, and steering parameters to match driving demands.

Mercedes-Benz has equipped the G 580 EQ with innovative off-road manoeuvres:

• G-TURN: Allows the vehicle to execute up to two full turns on the spot on unpaved or loose surfaces, facilitating tight pivoting around obstacles. Activation requires the vehicle to be stationary and specific drive mode settings engaged.
• G-STEERING: Reduces turning circle by independently controlling torque at each wheel, eliminating multi-point turns in confined spaces at speeds up to 25 km/h.
• Intelligent Off-Road Crawl Function: Maintains a consistent, adjustable low speed on challenging terrain, freeing the driver to focus on navigation without throttle or brake modulation.

Despite its electric heart, the G 580 EQ retains the emotive essence of its AMG lineage through the unique G-ROAR sound system, which emulates the classic V8 growl with deep bass and sonorous tones. This acoustic experience is adjustable via driving programs, ranging from subtle in Comfort to powerful in Sport, and includes welcoming and charging event sounds.

A newly developed OFFROAD COCKPIT embedded in the instrument cluster and media display provides critical off-road data—such as vehicle attitude, compass, altitude, steering angle, and tyre parameters—along with route scouting and customisation of off-road tasks.

The innovative Transparent Bonnet system leverages the 360° camera array to create a virtual view beneath the front of the vehicle, enabling drivers to detect obstacles obscured by steep angles and select optimal paths.

Visually, the electric G-Class preserves its rugged charm, featuring hallmark round headlights, boxy proportions, and wing-mounted indicators. Enhancements include a black-panel radiator grille with animated LED light bands, tinted lighting units, a raised bonnet, aerodynamic air curtains on rear wheel arches, and 20-inch AMG 10-spoke alloy wheels.

The Night Package introduces sporty black accents with tinted lights and wheels, complemented by optional MANUFAKTUR Black Accents for bespoke personalisation.

Inside, the Superior Line interior melds traditional G-Class styling cues—such as square-edged vents and passenger grab handle—with luxurious Nappa leather upholstery featuring diamond stitching, AMG carbon-fibre trim, and advanced features like the Burmester® 3D surround sound system and MBUX High-End Rear Seat Entertainment.

The MBUX infotainment system incorporates dual 12.3-inch displays and touch controls, adaptive software for personalised suggestions, extensive smartphone integration, and a voice assistant with around 20 G-Class-specific commands, including augmented reality navigation for complex traffic.

Equipped with a comprehensive suite of advanced driver assistance systems, the G 580 EQ ensures safety and convenience with Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC, Active Steering Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, a 360° parking camera, and the PRE-SAFE® system.

Mercedes-Benz’s extensive MANUFAKTUR program enables unrivalled customisation across exterior paints, interior upholstery, stitching, and details. For the first time, a two-tone leather interior in Catalan beige/black is offered, along with an almost fully leather-lined cabin option, including headliner and pillar trims in diamond design.

The EDITION ONE variant enhances exclusivity with three MANUFAKTUR paint finishes—South Sea Blue Magno, Opalite White Magno, and Classic Grey Solid—paired with blue trims on protective mouldings and brake callipers. Black MANUFAKTUR door handles embossed with the iconic “G” logo, matte black mirror housings, and running boards complete the distinctive exterior.

Inside, Nappa leather in silver pearl/black harmonises with blue carbon-fibre trim and AMG floor mats featuring blue stitching, mirroring the exterior’s signature blue accents.

The all-new Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology is priced from RM 958,888, while the EDITION ONE commands a premium at RM 998,888 on the road, inclusive of a wallbox and installation, but excluding insurance. Both variants are available now in Peninsular Malaysia through authorised dealers.
